Description

A comforting casserole that combines the rich flavors of caramelized onions, ground beef, and creamy cheese layered with fluffy rice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice (uncooked)
  • 1 packet French onion soup mix
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese
  • ½ cup French-fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease your 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked, draining any excess grease. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the uncooked rice, French onion soup mix, and beef broth. Stir until well combined.
  4. Fold in the cooked ground beef and sour cream until everything is smoothly incorporated.
  5. Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Top generously with shredded cheese.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 10-15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  7. Finally, sprinkle French-fried onions on top and bake for an additional 5 minutes.

Notes

Make-ahead: Assemble the casserole up to a day in advance and bake when ready to serve. For variations, consider adding vegetables like sautéed mushrooms or spinach.
