Description

Homemade Hush Puppies are a delicious and crispy Southern treat made from cornmeal, perfect as a side dish or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Add chopped onion to the dry ingredients and stir to combine.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 365°F (185°C).
  6. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, frying until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes.
  7. Remove hush puppies from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add diced jalapeños to the batter.
  • Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying to ensure crispy hush puppies.
  • These can be made ahead of time and reheated in the oven.
