Description

Delicious soft baked pretzel dogs filled with gooey cheese, perfect for a snack or party treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 8 hot dogs
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice)
  • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a long rope.
  6. Wrap each rope around a hot dog, enclosing it completely, and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add baking soda.
  8. Carefully drop each wrapped hot dog into the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove and place back on the baking sheet.
  9. Brush each pretzel dog with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving with cheese sauce or mustard.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add spices to the dough.
  • These pretzel dogs can be frozen after baking and reheated in the oven.
  • Experiment with different types of cheese for a unique twist.
