- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup shredded cheese (mozzarella or blend)
- 2 tablespoons mixed Italian herbs (oregano, basil, thyme)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: Combine the warm water, active dry yeast, and sugar. Allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Combine the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and Italian herbs.
- Mix the dough: Pour yeast mixture and olive oil into dry ingredients. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
- Knead the dough: Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Rise the dough: Place in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven: Preheat to 375°F (190°C).
- Prepare for filling: Roll out the dough, sprinkle cheese and garlic over it.
- Roll it up: Roll the dough into a tight log, sealing the filling inside.
- Final rise: Place seam-side down in a greased pan, cover, and rise for 30 minutes.
- Bake: Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool & slice: Allow to cool for a few minutes before slicing.
Notes
For quicker methods, use an air fryer at 320°F for 15-20 minutes. Consider adding sun-dried tomatoes or olives for customization.
