Description
A classic American comfort food combining juicy beef patties, melted cheese, and caramelized onions between crispy bread.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
- 4 slices American or Swiss cheese
- 4 slices rye or sourdough bread
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 onion, sliced (optional)
- 1/4 cup secret sauce (ketchup, mustard, and pickles)
Instructions
- Form the patties by gently shaping ground beef into rounds larger than the bread.
- Cook the beef patties in a skillet over medium-high heat until desired doneness, about 3–4 minutes per side.
- Add onions to the skillet after flipping the patties, sautéing until caramelized, about 5–7 minutes.
- Place cheese on the patties in the last minute, covering the skillet to help it melt.
- Butter one side of each bread slice generously.
- Assemble the sandwich with patties, cheese, and onions between two slices of bread, buttered sides facing out.
- Grill the sandwich in the skillet for about 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown, pressing gently with a spatula.
- Serve with secret sauce on the side for dipping.
Notes
Prepare patties ahead and keep them chilled. Use air fryer for a healthier option.
