Description

A classic American comfort food combining juicy beef patties, melted cheese, and caramelized onions between crispy bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 4 slices American or Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices rye or sourdough bread
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 onion, sliced (optional)
  • 1/4 cup secret sauce (ketchup, mustard, and pickles)

Instructions

  1. Form the patties by gently shaping ground beef into rounds larger than the bread.
  2. Cook the beef patties in a skillet over medium-high heat until desired doneness, about 3–4 minutes per side.
  3. Add onions to the skillet after flipping the patties, sautéing until caramelized, about 5–7 minutes.
  4. Place cheese on the patties in the last minute, covering the skillet to help it melt.
  5. Butter one side of each bread slice generously.
  6. Assemble the sandwich with patties, cheese, and onions between two slices of bread, buttered sides facing out.
  7. Grill the sandwich in the skillet for about 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown, pressing gently with a spatula.
  8. Serve with secret sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

Prepare patties ahead and keep them chilled. Use air fryer for a healthier option.
